Apple Hill is home to at least a couple dozen apple orchards and wineries which offer all sorts of fresh produce, honey and jams, ciders, brews, baked goods, and pumpkins; plan to spend the good part of a day exploring! Larsen Apple Barn boasts a Pioneer Farm Museum and the oldest apple tree in El Dorado county, so it's well worth a visit. Bring a lunch, because they've also got the best picnic area around (but don't forget to save room for their yummy baked goods!). On Saturdays the barn, bakery, and museum are closed, but you can still access the box. Larsen's is most easily reached by taking US-50 (from either east or west) to Exit 54 (Cedar Grove). Turn northwest on Carson Road, then north on Larsen Drive. Larsen's is on the right, just to the north of Rainbow Orchards (which you'll know when you see!).
After parking in Larsen's lot, look to your west at the big, grassy field. Cross Larsen Drive carefully, and find El Dorado's oldest apple tree. See a waterwheel just off to the south? Head there and look through the ornate iron gate - you need to get to the area behind it (hint: head north, towards the waterfall). Enter the shady area and find the rear of the waterwheel house. Opposite the door at the base of an ungroomed area, you should find a large rock - and the box beneath it.
The picnic area is popular (especially on summer and fall Sundays), so please take care when locating and replacing the box. Report any problems with the box to
Jennie.
Enjoy!
